Below you will find a short list of basic sports betting tips and advice.

Sports betting tip #1 – Money Management

This is without a doubt the most important aspect of betting sports and possibly the most neglected. The first key to proper money management is to be sure not to bet more than you can afford to lose.

Sports betting tip #2 – Shopping for Numbers

The second most important aspect of betting on sports is shopping for the best number. There will be more discrepancy in the numbers on different sports at different sports books.

Sports betting tip #3 – Never Gamble While under the Influence

There is a reason the casinos in Las Vegas supply you with free drinks while you are gambling. Because alcohol clouds your judgment and usually helps you to make rash decisions you usually wouldn’t otherwise make. To be a successful sports bettor you need to operate with a clear mind.

Sports betting tip #4 – Do your Homework

As a bettor, you have the advantage of streamlining your research, which is something the sports books are not at liberty to do. They must keep on top of EVERY sport and EVERY game. The best way to win money betting sports is to develop a niche and follow it closely.

Sports betting tip #5 – Check the Odds

Some sports books have better odds on parlays and teasers. When you are betting big bucks the difference in odds translate into a huge difference in your payout. All it takes is a little research of the sports books you usually bet at.

Sports betting tip #6 – Play Home Dogs

There is probably no better bet in sports than playing an underdog at home. Teams play inspired ball at home. Slim underdogs regularly win outright.

Sports betting tip #7 – Bet at the Right Time

The sharp bettors tend to bet underdogs, and they tend to bet them early. Squares usually bet later in the day (or week, for football) and they tend to pick the favorites. If you like an underdog, it is best to get your bet in as late as possible, where there is heavy action from squares on favorites.

    I can suggest 2 sites.
    The first is sportsinsights.com
This site is free and it gives you everything from a team's trends to public betting percentages. A lot of good info on there to handicap with.
If you want to skip handicapping and go with the experts, you can go to http://www.cappersaccess.com This site has handicappers picks. These guys sell their picks for hundreds of dollars sometimes, but you can find their picks for free on here.
    Good luck!

Do yourself a favor first. Have a trial run of at least 1,000 games in which you make predictions against the point spread without betting money. If you're right at least 54% of the time you MIGHT actually be good enough not to lose any money and to actually gain a profit and perhaps even make a living at it. I say "MIGHT" because even over a 1,000 games you might just get LUCKY enough to achieve 54% ( which is the percentage you will need to turn a appeciable profit).

You THINK that you know something the sports lines makers know, but you don't.

You WILL continue to lose in the long run. Maybe you'll get some winners and be excited at those wins, but when all is said and done, the bookmakers get the money.

My tip? Make a betting pool with some collegues and friends. 5 or 10 bucks each for the whole season. Winner takes all – nobody makes any "juice" money off the bets – everyone enjoys themselves.

You probably won't be able to use a cell phone in the sportsbook area. They don't want you to be able to call other casinos and figure out who has the best line. Likewise, you probably won't be able to use a computer or similar device.

You'll get tickets with your bets on them, be sure you have a safe place to keep them, especially if you're betting something that won't finish for a few days. If your bet wins, you trade the ticket in to get your money. Be sure you keep track of winners and losers! It sounds simple, but I can't tell you how many people have tossed winning tickets by accident.

Most of all, have a good time. Unless you're making huge bets, you'd probably get better lines on the internet anyway. If you're going to take the time to go to a sportsbook, grab a drink (if you're into that) and enjoy the game.

    Good luck!
