When my kids were 4 years old I loved playing games with them. We played all kinds of games and I especially liked the ones that I could interject a little bit of learning into…these were our five favorites:
1. Math Egg Hunts – We would do egg hunts with plastic eggs (great for indoor or outdoor) filled with pennies. Once all the eggs were found we would sit down and practice counting them up for extra counting practice.
2. Word Recognition Game – I would hang signs up around the house labeling simple items such as "door", "chair", and "clock" and we would practice saying the words. Then a few days later I would see if they could read the words without the objects! This sight word recognition helped both my kids become early, confident readers.
3. Build The Highest Tower – My husband would play this game with the kids over the weekend and they loved it! They would build a tall tower with their legos and try to touch the ceiling with it before it fell.
4. Rock/Shell Painting – If we had collected shells from a beach trip, the kids loved to get their washable paints out and spend an afternoon painting shells outside. Or, we would go on a rock hunt around the yard for great rocks to paint. We still have lots of these painted items decorating our children's rock garden in the backyard.
5. Hide and Go Boo! – My son loved this game and still talks about it today (he is 7 now). We would turn out all the lights and play hide-and-seek in the dark! The kids would be supplied with flashlights to help them guide their way during their searches. Then once found, hiders would have to yell "BOO"! Great game for Halloween!
Hope these inspire you to create even more games for you and your little one to enjoy!
