The thing about about backgammon is that it is a gambling game. Most people don't put money on it when they play, and they don't really play to a certain number of points, so they lose some of the thrill of using the doubling cube. A normal game starts out worth one point or a dollar. Then if someone thinks they can win they take the double cube and challenge their opponent. If they accept the challenge the game is now worth 2 points or dollars. Now lets say fortunes reverse and the other player thinks they can win, so they flip the doubling cube and make the game worth 4 points or dollars. Now the cube goes to his opponent. And back and forth until the game is worth 64 points or dollars. At any time the opponent can refuse and lose however many points or dollars. Now the real trick is too get all of your pieces off the board without the opponent getting any of his off. This automatically doubles the game and is called a gammon. And if you can somehow stop your opponent from getting all of his pieces out of his starting back spaces, while getting all of yours off the board then the game is worth triple -This is called a backgammon. So the fun is in trying to get a gammon or a backgammon.
If you play for money it can get to be quite exciting, but most should play to a certain points level to get the real excitement out of the game.
